Close to the heart of the German Rhineland in southern North Rhine-Wesphalia is the city of Bedburg. Not far from the vibrant city of Cologne, it is situated on the flat and fertile lands to the west of the Rhine in the Erft valley. It has a very rich history of settlement as the many castles in the area will attest to.
Bedburg’s own castle is a great place to start your sight-seeing as this 12th century moated fortress is certainly a great site. It is actually one of many on the well-trodden Water Castle Route that transverses this region of Germany — as with no great hills to perch on they needed this alternative defense.
The city center is another place to spend some time — and you will find yourself wandering through the many cobbled streets here, looking up at the pretty building facades and the distinctive St Lambert church. Many old merchant houses in the center have been transformed into little cafes, with their busy seating areas sprawling into the streets to soak up the local atmosphere.
Due to the regions level landscape, there are many kilometers of walking and cycling paths in and around Bedburg that you can investigate. The Erft valley Radweg (cycle route) is very extensive and well signposted if you have the time to journey to neighboring towns by pedal power! There are also many windmills to see along the way, draining and irrigating the agricultural land in this peaceful valley.
Equally relaxing for all age groups is a stroll in the huge Kottenforst-Ville nature park, running along the Cologne Bay. This extensive park covers around 1,000 square kilometers of land and offers wildlife watchers a real treat. Amongst its more well-known creatures, it also offers a home to some endanged species that you might have to search a bit harder for!
Being close to Cologne, you may well be in for a treat during the local Carnival season around spring, where the locals erupt into life and fill the streets with mischief! Celebrated in earnest throughout this region of Germany you can certainly get yourself involved in any number of ways and have a great time doing so!
