Bergstraße District Map
Towns & Villages in the Bergstraße District
- Groß Rohrheim
- Hirschhorn (Neckar)
- Lautertal (Odenwald)
The Bergstraße district is popular with tourists for good reason — not least the nationally-acclaimed therapeutic spas at Lindenfels. The town also offers a medieval festival each year where locals can be seen in traditional costume and a variety of games and challenges are set for the resident “knights.”
If festivals appeal then you might also like to consider Heppenheim, the capital of the Bergstraße, which hosts both an international wine and a street theater festival each year.
Besides the festivals there are plenty of scenic country areas to visit. Hirschhorn is located within the boundaries of a national park. And in nearby picturesque Bensheim one can climb up to the fifteen meter tall Bismark Tower. It sits atop a mountain for breathtaking views across the valleys below.
A further highlight of the district is Lorsch with its UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lorsch Abbey, a Benedictine abbey founded in 764. It is the source of the Codex Aureus of Lorsch — a luxuriously illustrated gospel book believed to date back to 778 and still in fine condition.
