Cloppenburg District Has A Distinct Frisian Heritage

Close to Oldenburg in Lower Saxony you will find the peaceful Cloppenburg District with the huge Wildeshausen Geest Nature Park to the east. As part of the ancient Oldenburgisches Münsterland, it is mainly very plain, flat countryside having been converted from swamps and fens in the past centuries for agricultural use.

Map of the Cloppenburg District

The town of Cloppenburg is the capital and is a great place to reflect upon the culture of the whole area. Surrounded by farmed fields and with its castle still intact you can see how the people have lived more recently. Then take a visit to the recreated medieval village showing local buildings from 800 to 1800 to get an idea of their past as well.

This area of Germany (as well as neighboring Holland and Denmark) was settled by the Frisians and their culture is somewhat different to the rest of the country. Their distinct language still exists in many towns and villages within the Cloppenburg District. The town of Saterland has so many native speakers that you will find bilingual road and information signs on the streets. :-)
