Dithmarschen District — Landscape Of Rocky Coast

Sitting on the coast of the North Sea, the Dithmarschen District has taken a leaf out of The Netherlands books and has been reclaiming land from the ocean. Since the 15th century, this region of the Schleswig-Holstein state has doubled in size with its success, although much of the land is very low and filled with marshes.

Due to the marshy and swampy fens here, there were no great palaces built as there was nothing to defend. So here, the churches are the great buildings — one being the great Meldorf Cathedral in Meldorf which at one time was the only church at all here.

Spires can be seen for miles across the lowlands, rising above the small villages on the pieces of raised land they call home: the Geest.

The whole coast of the Dithmarschen District is within the Wadden Sea National Park, and wildlife abounds — including common seals. Many beaches and villages border the rocky shores. But if you don’t mind paying, the seaside town of Büsum has an artificial sandy beach you can relax on.
