Euskirchen District — Picturesque Mountain Region

The Euskirchen District is the southernmost district in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and borders with the mountains of Belgium on its west.

The whole district is within the massive Eifel Mountain Chain and its impressive hills and valleys filled with churches and mineral springs are the key to its character and history.

This forested expanse holds another secret… it is actively volcanic! There are many locations along its length that hold steaming hot vents and thermal springs.

Due to their height, they are also the source of many main waterways, including the Erft and the Urf. And the river Ahr famously has its source in the basement of a medieval building in the town of Blankenheim!

The district capital Euskirchen, is over 700 years old. Its winding streets are filled with half-timbered houses that dominate this region of Germany.

The people here are also greatly involved in the whole carnival tradition. Being so close to the cultural cities of Cologne and Bonn, you are sure to witness some traditional mischief! :-)
