This majestic wilderness is the source of many rivers — including the Ems — and is crammed full of medieval history. There are several castles along its length and the moated Tatenhausen castle is still inhabited today!

Hiking and cycling through the mighty forests of this region is certainly a worthwhile adventure, and there are many trails to follow and half-timbered villages to explore. At night, the area is popular with many species of bats and camping is certainly a great option.

Famous tastes abound here, including the world famous Werther’s Original sweets from the village of Werther (Westfalen) (now made in nearby Halle (Westphalia)), and many Schnaps distilleries using Juniper trees to create the traditional tipple of Steinhäger (in Steinhagen).

The town of Rietberg is famous for another reason. Not only is it known as “The Town of Gables” after its delicate architectural style, but it attracts over 50,000 people every year for its amazing Carnival!

The whole district love to celebrate — and you are sure to be welcome… :-)
