Oberbergischer Kreis — The Great Outdoors!

The hilly Oberbergischer Kreis is located to the west of Sauerland — filled with nature walks and ski slopes; and to the north of Westerwald — one of the largest mountain ranges in Germany.

It also covers an extensive tract of the Bergisches Land Nature Reserve, a large stockpile of great peaks and valleys, filled with appealing hiking trails and river valleys.

If you fancy something different, why not seek out the many caves found around the old mining areas and near Wiehl — many are filled with ornate stalactites.

This rural district is crowded with ancient villages and historic town centers that are filled with half-timbered houses and tiny streets. Many, including the state capital of Gummersbach, have examples of the locally known and beloved bunte Kerchen. These are beautiful colored churches, having been painted with medieval designs that you will just love.

There are several moated castles spread across the Oberbergischer Kreis, including the 12th century Schloss Hückeswagen in Hückeswagen which houses a huge museum, and the elegant Schloss Königsbrunn built in the late 1300′s by one of the richest men in Germany.
