The Schweinfurt District is where four beautiful nature areas come together: the Steigerwald‘s woods, the Haßberge’s hills, and the low mountains of the Spessart and Rhön. Add to that the gently flowing waters of the Main and Wert rivers, and you have a formula for true outdoor pleasure. :-)

Towns & Villages in the Schweinfurt District
- Michelau im Steigerwald
The rural district encompasses but does not politically include its capital, Schweinfurt. Pathways for walking and cycling make it easy for you to travel throughout the area. They extend for some 900 kilometers in total!
The northern market town of Stadtlauringen, for example, was developed on old farm land. Its proximity to the southwestern Haßberge range and Hesselbach Forest make it a perfect launch point for jaunts into nature.
Werneck, also a market town, is situated to the southwest, where the Balthasar-Neumann Castle is a magnificent sight to behold. Built in the 18th century, along with its much acclaimed chapel, the fortress is now used as a hospital.
To the southeast, Gerolzhofen is a medieval town hall with a dozen centuries of history. Stop here for some wine from the nearby vineyards or to take a tour within its 14th century walls.
As you hike or bike, you will pass through numerous tiny towns, such as Oberschwarzach and Schwanfeld. Be sure to take advantage of the rural hospitality, home cooking (such as suckling pig) and plentiful peace and quiet. :-)
