Südliche Weinstraße — Gorgeous Southern Wine Road

Literally translated as the Southern Wine Road, the fertile Südliche Weinstraße sits on the border with France in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Covered mainly by the Pfälzer Wald — an extensive forested area — this region is famous for its north-south wine route — the first touristic route in Germany.

From May to October, the vineyard tours, the wine festivals and the free sampling tables are everywhere. The routes are easy to follow with their bright yellow signs showing a healthy bunch of grapes on them.

Traveling through many idyllic towns and villages on the way as well are historic cities like Neustadt am der Weinstraße for tasting, sampling and enjoying their best produce.

Annweiler am Trifels is also a beautiful place to visit and has its own ruins, but the surrounding red sandstone is what makes this location special.

This area of high hills in the Südliche Weinstraße is known as Palatinate Switzerland and is where you will want to spend some time, just looking at the scenery. And in fall, the whole region passes from green to russet then to gold as the huge mountainside forests shed their leaves in readiness for the cold winters that follow.
