Völklingen Is The Typical History Laden Small German Town

Völklingen has a heart of iron but a physical beauty that immediately makes you plan a picnic or a leisurely stroll by the river. You’ll certainly be beguiled by its ethereal beauty but Völklingen is known for its iron works and industry based prosperity rather than its abundant pastoral good looks.

You may not be thrilled with the prospect of visiting an ironworks facility when there is any number of prettier destinations available, but the Völklinger Hütte is no ordinary foundry. In fact, it is the only one of its kind from the 19th century to have survived intact in all of Europe — one reason this put her on the UNESCO World Heritage list. And once you’ve been there you’ll realize its importance. It simply dominates the place and does hold an interesting variety of stuff.

Can you imagine 17,000 people used to work there daily? Grab a hard hat and get going. Good luck keeping up with the kids. While there you won’t miss the Water Tower built way back in 1918. It’s a concrete monster that can hold up to 3 million liters of water!

In Völklingen it’s not all industry and machinery; you also get to see some stunning displays of medieval architecture. Check out the magnificent Versöhnungskirche with its unique green spire atop a clock tower. Compare this with the elegant Eligiuskirche or St. Eligius Church with its more somber structure.

Another elegant building to be visited here would be the Altes Rathaus or the Old Town Hall. This is indeed a place to spend some time. Stroll along the pedestrians-only street to fully appreciate the medieval ambience. The row of buildings on either side will surely take some gawking.

Völklingen with its extraordinarily beautiful landscapes is also perfect for any number of outdoor sport and activity. Get hiking, biking, or simply walking along some of the most amazing woodlands and hill sides. Stunning views greet you on all sides making you forget any exertion or even hunger.

And of course, when hunger strikes make sure you head for the local cafes and restaurants where you get to enjoy a variety of local cuisine. Make sure you try the éclairs. ;-)
