The Haßberge District makes the most of its location in the Main River valley. You will find here not one but two nature parks, one named after the district and the other part of a much larger preserve extending far into Franconia. For recreation, take your pick of hiking trails and cycling paths, lakes for swimming, and tributaries for boating.

Within the boundaries of Steigerwald Nature Park is Eltmann, on the eastern edge of Franconian wine country. Its 11th-century Wallburg Watchtower provides spectacular views of the Main River valley as well as access by bridge to a castle nearby.
In fact, if you enjoy castles, the district directory lists no fewer than 20 of them, some restored and others left ruins. Many abound near the town of Ebern, where you can tour the fortifications of Eyrichshof, Burg Rotenhan, Altenstein and Lichtenstein.
Be sure to stop in Haßfurt, capital of the district, to marvel at the breathtaking 14th-century Ritterkapelle (Knight Chapel). It is considered among the most prized late-Gothic architectural monuments in Lower Franconia.
Food is also a major interest in this district. In the farming town of Hofheim, you may wish to sample a beer from its brewery or produce from the well-tended local gardens and orchards.
Late summer wine is a treat awaiting you in Zeil, where vineyards occupy the neighboring slopes. And the breads, pastries and cheesecakes of festival-focused Königsberg will satisfy your tastebuds for sure.
