Nordfriesland District — The Flat Dream In The North

At the very north of Germany itself, sits the Nordfriesland District. Bordering the North Sea and Denmark, this region is well known for its grass-covered sand dunes, seal colonies, striped lighthouses and rugged cliffs. But it is also one of the most prosperous places in the whole country.

There are 15 islands along the coast known as the North Frisian Islands, and one in particular, Sylt, is the domain of the wealthy!

With the traditional reed-thatched cottages being taken over by Louis Vuitton and the like, you will not go short of style around here. You can’t drive here either: you either fly or travel on the vehicle-friendly Marschbahn train — and you even need to purchase a day pass to explore the island.

More traditonal are the coastal towns further south, with the capital Husum being a prime example — it is the starting out point for investigating the tiny “Halligen” islands by boat. The harbourside is filled with beautifully colored towering tradesmans properties — echoing the Scandinavian look.

By the way, the Nordfriesland District along with the whole peninsula were under Danish rule, and many regional languages still survive in the area, including pockets of South Jutlandic and North Fresian in the older populations.
