Diepholz may come as a bit of a surprise to city dwellers.
This little town will take you back a couple of centuries with its untouched natural beauties and unpolluted air and water. It’s almost like you’ve come across a forgotten village. But if you hanker for the pubs and the slick cafes Bremen or Osnabrück are just an hour away, respectively.
Diepholz is, however, perfect for enjoying the great outdoors. Imagine an undiscovered rural retreat where you can bike, hike, and go trekking on hilly trails to your heart’s content.
Then imagine coming across a local family run eatery where they serve you fresh homemade food along with the ubiquitous chilled beer. Sauerkraut and pretzels are commonplace and these are no pale imitations but the real deal.
Diepholz does have a town center where it’s possible to try out some multi-cuisine dining if you’re dying for pasta or a burger. They have a cinema if you want to check out some entertainment.
Then, of course, there’s the local shopping strip along Lange Straße or Long Road which is where you’ll find all sorts of handicrafts and local products. The pedestrian zone here in the town center is quite an attraction. Check out the Town Hall and the local park in the vicinity.
You can’t miss the courthouse which actually used to be a castle of some kind. There’s something weird about this place, though, for it’s supposed to have caught fire almost six times in the past 800 years of its existence and nobody seems to know how.
Well, you’d better ask the locals for their take on that. ;-)
