Dillingen is a beautiful and peaceful town in Bavaria that you are sure to enjoy. It is also known as Dillingen an der Donau (Dillingen on the Danube) seeing as the town is located on the beautiful Danube River.
For over 400 years, the town was part of the Roman Empire. The town has been meticulously preserved and therefore, there are many remnants of the Roman times for you to admire. The first thing I recommend to do is stroll throughout the town and take in the breathtaking architecture and scenery.
Today, its primary industries are steelmaking, engineering, and chemicals.
Although Dillingen does not have a large population and is fairly quiet, it certainly boasts many things to do.
Visiting the various Roman churches throughout the town is the first thing I would put on your itinerary. These have also been well-maintained and you’re sure to enjoy the beautiful architecture and interiors of these buildings.
Next, the old university is also worth a visit — established in the year 1549. Napoleon proceeded to shut the university down in the year 1804. However, the university maintained professors dedicated to theological and philosophical studies through the 20th century.
The Bavarian Center for the Education and Training of Teachers and Personnel Management, known as the (take a deep breath!) Akademie für Lehrerfortbildung und Personalführung in German, took control of the university in the year 1971. Visitors to the town will definitely enjoy strolling throughout and around the university which has been well-maintained and preserved.
The town also offers a large amount of local entertainment and events. Get in touch with your hotel or the town’s tourist office prior to your visit to find out what events will be going on during your visit.
Also, there is much on offer in terms of outdoor activities. You can choose from biking, hiking, or just a long stroll along the Danube River to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Another interesting thing to note about Dillingen an der Donau is that one of the largest employers in the area is the manufacturer of household appliances, Bosch and Siemens.
All in all, I find Dillingen an der Donau is a beautiful and interesting Romanesque town that you’re sure to enjoy.
