Sitting in central Rhineland-Palatinate is the mountainous Donnersbergkreis. Surrounding the highest peak in the state (687 m / 2254 ft), this region is in the north of the Pfälzer Wald — the very large forested territory covering most of the southern part of this state.

The capital city of Kirchheimbolanden has 8th century roots, and as you would expect is beautifully medieval and has a grand palace and ancient city walls. It has good reason to be so grand as many of Europe’s reigning monarchs have ancestors from here.
Plenty of outdoor activities can be had by individuals, couples and families across the Donnersbergkreis. These include following the German Wine Route to the east, or climbing and hiking in the Alzey hills to the north.
Maybe a few days wandering through the many towns and villages in the mountains or going underground in some of the old mine shafts? Or even just taking a huge picnic out into the great Palatine Forest to commune with nature.
