Gleichen Is Famous For Its Twin Towers Atop Mountain Peaks

Gleichen’s twin peaks are none other than the Neuen-Gleichen castle and the Alten-Gleichen castle which is situated on two different mountain peaks. These are visible for 10km in the distance and can be viewed even from neighboring cities.

Speaking of surrounding areas, Gleichen has a number of adjoining villages that have their own attractions to offer. From various half-timbered homes, to well-preserved ruins, churches, and Town Halls, you’ll have a great time touring these little known spots.

For instance, the nearby Niedeck has the ruins of an old fort, while in Bischhausen you’ll see the Lutheran St. Martin’s Church with an awesome late Gothic wooden sculpture.

Gleichen is full of quirky attractions that you don’t come across in every German town.

The Hurkutstein Monument is a case in point. Here you have a gigantic oak tree which has been declared a natural monument and rightly so. Built almost into it is the Forest Lodge. You simply have to see it for yourself.

From this springs the legend of the Reinhausen Benedictine monastery which is now known as the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher. This is a huge attraction that entices visitors from all over.

Gleichen’s Waldschlösschen is an attractive half-timbered building with quite a bit of history attached. It used to be a spa in the early 1900s, then it transformed into an educational institution conducting seminars and workshops on AIDS related topics.

Gleichen’s Regional Park is perfect to add some physical activities to your itinerary. Here you have a hiking area amidst some of the best scenery around. Surely a great way to spend the day if you like the outdoors and fresh mountain air!
