In fact, each small wine-producing town in the district, such as Dettelbach and Prichsenstadt, holds a pageant to select a wine princess and their top wine.
If you can get to the town of Volkach for its annual wine festival, you can witness the gathering of these local winners and the crowning of the overall princess for the Franken wine region. Her image will appear on local wine bottles throughout the year of her reign.
Of course wine is not the only attraction in the district. Mainbernheim is where Haribo gummi candies are produced. And in Marksteft you will find beer gardens and some the area’s best Frankish cuisine, such as local bratwurst.
For architecture, visit Marktbreit with its imposing Renaissance castle overlooking the town and a splendid 16th-century Town Hall featuring a pillared great hall and a Gothic spiral staircase. In Kitzingen tour the 13th-century Crooked Tower with its Carnival Museum inside.
And the Knauf Museum in Iphofen is worth a stop for its many replicas of artifacts from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt.
