Lahn-Dill-Kreis — For Animal And History Lovers

The Lahn-Dill-Kreis district is named after the two main rivers that flow through it — the Lahn and the Dill. It is home to the much-loved Hessian State Stud Farm with its museum devoted to horses and horsemanship together with a rich array of annual events.

The castle at Braunfels is another site that demands attention with its finely decorated interior and selection of noteworthy paintings. The attached 55 acre forest park is home to a number of animals including deer and, if you are lucky, wild boar.

The animal lover is also well catered for at Uckersdorf near Herborn with its extensive bird park featuring over 100 species of captive bird plus an active conservation breeding program. The town hall itself is quite unusual in that it is decorated with the coats of arms of a number of local families.

Lastly, take a drip underground at Aßlar with its museum of mining where one can experience the industrial heyday of the area.
