Neustadt (Holstein) — Quaint Fishing Village, Amazing Sunsets

Neustadt in Holstein is small enough to wander around without getting lost and yet affords a great sense of belonging. The old town center epitomizes this nostalgic quality with its medieval buildings and sculptures enveloped in an air of bygone times.

The harbor area, especially, is a soothing sight and quite an experience for those who can’t remember the last time they witnessed a sunset. Find a good spot well before the event unfolds and take in your fill of the rows of fishing boats gently bobbing on the calm waters against a backdrop of medieval buildings in the distance.

Suffice it to say that if you don’t come away a poet, you have a heart of stone. ;-)

Neustadt has this effect of inducing relaxation, but don’t take a nap yet. You are in fact in the region’s foremost water sports venue. So whether it’s a sleek yacht or a fishing boat you’ll find your sport on these waters.

If sports is not your thing, get ready to explore. The local TV studio where a popular series known as Küstenwache or Coastguard is produced welcomes visitors in summer.

Then there are the various seaside health resorts such as the Pelzerhaken (see webcam!) and Rettin which would indeed be a fabulous way to spend some time. There’s even a nudist beach if you’re inclined that way.

Neustadt, being a historic town, has its share of architectural wonders you can’t miss. The city wall is a memorial to its medieval past and still presents an awesome sight. When you visit the harbor area, don’t miss the Pagodenspeicher.

Then there’s the Cap Arcona Museum which is definitely worth your time. You won’t need any directions to find the 28 meter light house on the beach which promises great views.

Neustadt has its cultural events that bring the locals out in full regalia. One such is the European Folklore Festival which has been celebrated since 1951, every third year in August. Please don’t pass up your chance to taste some great local delicacies; the sausages are to die for and so is the seafood!
