Oldenburg in Holstein’s best feature has to be its location on the Baltic Bay. What this means is that it has this great maritime history that takes you back hundreds of years to the time of the Vikings and well, you know what I mean, the stuff you only get to see in movies.
If you like this sort of thing you should simply head to the Harbor Museum. Visit the Starigard, get your fill of the diligently restored Viking war ship and the Slavic sailing ship among a host of other incredibly interesting maritime artifacts.
Oldenburg has an Old Town square like any self-respecting German town does, but this one here certainly far outshines most.
I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is that sets it apart. It could be the fact that this town is incredibly old, I mean it dates back more than 1,000 years and still has buildings and monuments from that time with an age-defying magnificence.
Then there are large stretches of pedestrian zones which means you can spend the better part of the day strolling around and admiring these beauties. The crowning glory here has to be the St. John’s Church on Wallstraße that somehow completes the picture quite nicely. The Hops Market building is not to be outdone either. In fact they are all winners.
Oldenburg has more museums in addition to the Harbor Museums. You can imagine what a town this old would have to tell its visitors about the Slavs and the Vikings and the rest of them. Get to the Wall Museum and it immediately transports you back to the Medieval Age. You can even try your hand at doing some of the things folks did back in those days.
Oldenburg in Holstein is, of course, big on archaeology and all things related. One of the most famous monuments around here would have to be the Ring Wall about 18 meters high and going all around the whole area. From atop you get a view of the wetlands and woods in the distance.
Do yourself a favor and get aboard a guided tour so you get to see everything and miss nothing relevant. Since the town is full of historic and cultural attractions, you’d do well to go about it in an organized manner.
