Pirna Is The Ancient Gateway To Saxon Switzerland

Pirna is to be found in the state of Saxony and is very aptly known as the gateway to Saxon Switzerland. Its proximity to Dresden, another wonderful little city, makes it all the more appealing.

Well, as for history, you can find yourself traveling all the way back to the Stone Age if you join the dots right. Meanwhile relax, enjoy the medieval ambience and soak in the scenic beauty of Pirna.

This town has many attractions waiting for you, but perhaps the most poignant memories that you will retain will be of the Marketplace. This spot immediately appeals to your senses as you find yourself transported to a medieval age with its ornate architecture and fine, detailed artistry. The cobbled streets and narrow streets invite exploration which will surely be well rewarded.

Check out the magnificent Town Hall right at the center of it all. This historic landmark has done duty as ware house and assemble hall among other things down the ages since it was built in the 15th century. You can still see the various styles that have been added during renovations down the ages.

Another pleasing feature in the Marketplace would have to be the Burghers’ houses. You’ll be soon admiring the arched entrances and ornate courtyards. Don’t miss the Canalettohaus, the Marienhaus, the Barbiergasse, and the Obere Burgstraße. You’ll also see a milestone dating back to 1722.

For more astounding architecture in Pirna, you need to visit the St. Mary’s Church dating back to the 15th century. This here is a master specimen of Gothic architecture with its high vaulting ceiling and exquisite baroque interiors.

More of the same, though not in same category, is to be found at the Dominican monastery from the 13th century. Attached to it is the late Gothic chapterhouse which hosts the Municipal Museum. Enjoy the religious artifacts and art on display.

If you feel the need to get to know Pirna a bit more, you need to visit the many museums here that will quench your desire. Get a good dose of the city historical exhibition at the Stadtmuseum and if you’re musically inclined, the Richard Wagner Graupa is the one for you.
