On the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein sits the Plön District, in the Bay of Kiel. The coastal plains are flat and filled with lakes, and the southern edge is filled with the hills and valleys of the aptly named Holstein Switzerland.

The capital town of the district is Plön. It sits proudly on the banks of many of the regions lakes — including the massive Großer Plöner See, the largest lake in the entire state. Its magnificent white Castle (Schloss) sits on a hill overlooking the main town.
The whole region is well known for its tourism and this area is no exception, with its low hills and miles of hiking trails. Cycling is also very popular in these flat lands — offering mile upon mile of peaceful farmland to explore.
The coastal zones of the smaller towns on the northern edge of the Plön District are filled with wide promenades and sandy beaches. Views inland stretch for miles across the lowlands and marshes, with flocks of visiting waterfowl throughout the seasons.
