Rangsdorf will capture your imagination and it’s not all because of its natural beauty and exciting culture. There’s a valiant piece of history attached to this little town dating back to World War II.
You see, it’s from the local airfield here that Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg set off in his bid to assassinate Hitler in what Tom Cruise has now made famous as Operation Valkyrie. Of course, as we all now know he was shot dead for his pains. How history would have been changed if he had not failed in this valiant bid.
Rangsdorf Lake is probably where you’ll be at, once you’ve made your way into this urban town. A casino resort is located ideally on its sandy shores. That really should take care of entertainment and gastronomy but then you really should get out and see the sunset, explore the nature reserve or maybe even just laze around on the sandy shores of the lake. Of course, it goes without saying here’s your perfect opportunity to swim, sail, surf, or sunbathe.
It might interest you to know that the lake is a motorboat-free zone. Such thoughtful gestures really ensure you have a nice, stress-free vacation time. Even the winter months do nothing to dampen the spirits here. This is when the lake freezes over completely and you get to try your skills at ice yachting and skating and a host of other winter activities you’ve probably never even heard of.
Rangsdorf has its share of historical architecture. You’ve got to visit the local Church. One of the really striking specimens is the soaring tower of the Dorfkirche in the village of Groβ Machnow. You’ll see how this village church dating back to the 13th century is considerably different from the ones you’ve probably seen around the region. The quaint windows embedded in the granite stone clad walls make for a truly stunning appearance.
There’s also the Manor in Groβ Machnow. You’ll find this especially eye catching with its clock tower and neoclassical style of architecture.
The Eissegelmuseum and the Bücker-Museum with its aeronautical exhibits are two other spots you shouldn’t miss while you’re here.
Rangsdorf will amaze you with its gaggle of wild geese coming all the way from Siberia. These frequent flyers take over the place till they’ve had enough and leave just as noisily as they came.
