Schleswig-Flensburg District Is An Ancient Land

Bordering Denmark to the north, and running along the coast of the Baltic Sea is the Schleswig-Flensburg District. The southern border is defined by the extensive Schlei — a huge salt-water inlet carved over 40km (25mi) into the mainland.

The capital town of Schleswig is at the end of the inlet and its great cathedral houses the tomb of King Frederick I of Denmark. Just outside of town is the village of Hedeby — an ancient Viking settlement that can still be visited today.

Many of the region’s main towns are very close to Denmark, and the town of Glücksburg on the Baltic coast houses a royal moated castle. The three-winged Renaissance Water Castle (Wasserschloss) is perfectly formed and appears to float on the surrounding lake. Many royal families have resided here, including those from Russia and Greece.

The Schleswig-Flensburg District is also the home of the “Anglen” — the ancient Germanic tribe that colonised England and gave the land its name.
