The main reason why tourists come to Schneverdingen is the Nature Park Lüneburger Heide. This park has an area of about 1,100 square kilometers and consists of around 20 different natural conservation areas. Throughout this area (of which the city is surrounded), you can go wandering on trails, have a picnic or relax and watch the nearby nature. The area is mostly forested, making it a nice place for a stroll.
In the nature park, there is a peat moor, the Pietzmoor. This area is just outside of the town, and is interesting to see.
There are two different paths (one that is 4.8 kilometers and the other that is 6.6 kilometers long) that will give you a pretty good introduction to the area.
Once you’re back in Schneverdingen… You probably have seen a million different churches while traveling in Germany, but you are going to want to make the One World Church number million and one. This church isn’t old, and there isn’t much of a history to it, but it is unlike any other church you have probably seen on your travels.
Made out of wood and glass, it definitely has a more modern appearance. When you go inside, you are going to notice a bunch of dirt bottles behind the altar. Yep, that’s right, that dirt and sand came from all corners of the earth and is displayed behind the altar. If you are coming from a far off place, bring a vial of dirt to donate.
Most small towns don’t have a lot of culture, but Schneverdingen has the annual Höpen Air music festival, which has been going on since the 1980s. Taking place in the first week of June, this festival brings in tourists (and bands) from all over the area. Those who are in the area should definitely plan to check it out.
A lot of people want to know when the best time of year to come to Schneverdingen is. The answer is during the Heideblüten Festival at the end of August. During this time of year, the whole area is covered with a purple flower that grows naturally in the area. There is even a queen of the weekend, who reigns over the ceremony. Would you believe that this town of 19,000 people has 40,000 visitors for this festival? So make sure to book your hotel in advance!
