On the edge of the North Sea and with the Elbe to the south, the Steinburg District sits in western Schleswig-Holstein. With a flat and quite plain landscape with the odd windmill, this region is riddled with important waterways and trade routes.

The whole area has a very Scandinavian look about it due to its settlers and traders. The architecture is bright and airy, with decorative roofing and multi-storied tradesmen houses lining the quayside and docks.
The town of Glückstadt, the “City Of Luck,” was built up by the mouth of the Elbe to compete with the growing city of Hamburg upstream, whereas the district capital of Itzehoe built up business on the Stör instead.
The capital is also a place of contrast. Although it is the oldest town in the old territory of Holstein and is centered around its great castle, it also hosts the Wacken Open Air Festival, drawing over 60,000 Heavy Metal fans to the region every year!
