Weeze Airport (NRN) A.K.A. Niederrhein Airport

Weeze Airport (NRN), a.k.a. Niederrhein Airport, is a former military airbase that began its new life as a commercial and passenger airport in 2003. It hosts approximately 1.5 million guests each year and is currently one of the fastest-growing airports in Europe.

This airport has had a bit of an identity crisis with its names as it has changed it many times. It even originally asked to be called “Düsseldorf (Weeze)” but this idea was nixed because of the confusion it could cause with the actual Düsseldorf Airport. (And also because it is an hour away from that city!)

Only Ryanair and some of the other airlines now use this name for its flights here.

Distance

Weeze Airport, or Niederrhein Airport, is 7 km (4 mi) south-west of the Weeze city center and 9 km (6 mi) north-west of Kevelaer, or… a nice short footpath away from the border of Netherlands. :-) Speaking of which…

Nijmegen is just about 57 km (36 mi) away and to Eindhoven it is 81 km or 50 mi.

Oh, and the distance to Düsseldorf (south-east) is 83 km (52 mi).

Hours Of Operation

NRN operates every day from 03:30 – 24:00. This means that staying overnight at the airport is not possible. :-(

Weeze Airport Airlines

Weeze Airport specializes in the low-cost, no-frills airlines like Ryanair. You can also find flights with Hamburg International, Sky Airlines, Sun Express, Transavia, Welcome Air, and Wizz Air at NRN.

Weeze Airport Timetables

Here is the link to the current timetables for both arrivals and departures…

Getting To And From Weeze Airport

It is simple and convenient to reach Weeze Airport by public transport. Check the airport’s Web site for detailed, door-to-door instructions.

Long-Distance Trains

The Weeze Airport does not provide us with a train station. So those using long distance trains need to use regional trains at some point in order to reach the airport (see below).

Regional Trains

Enter “Weeze Terminal 1” when searching for an itinerary. You’ll reach Weeze station first, and a bus will do the rest of the trip (see below).

Buses

A comprehensive bus service allows you to connect to and from Düsseldorf, Essen, Duisburg, Cologne and Goch. There are also buses to Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Netherlands. Additionally, shuttle buses from the nearby train stations of Weeze (Bus SW1, 9 minutes) and Kevelaer (Bus 73 Air, 20 minutes) run directly to the Weeze Airport terminal.

Car / Taxi

There are many ways to reach the Weeze Airport by car. In most cases, though, you’ll travel via the Autobahn A57 and take exit Uedem/Weeze. The rest is well signposted.

From the Netherlands it’s often also via the A57. An exception is when you’re close to Eindhoven. Then you go onto the N270 via Helmond, Venray, and on to the Weeze Airport.

In case you are equipped with a navigation system enter the following address in order to get to the airport…

Street: Flughafen-Ring 1
City: Weeze (ZIP code: 47652)

Shopping

At the Niederrhein Airport Shop, you can pick up all those items you’d expect to find at an airport — perfumes, alcohol, and cosmetics. There is also a Travel Market where you can book flights and tours for your next holiday.

Food & Drink

Be sure to arrive plenty early before your flight and enjoy a meal at the Panorama Restaurant. True to its name, this glass-windowed eatery allows fun and interesting views of the tarmac and runways.

Fun Facts

If you have some time to kill at the airport, why not book one of Weeze’s official guided tours? In this two-and-a-half tour, you can learn about the airport’s beginnings as an air force base for the British, and other interesting facts.
