Weißwasser (Oberlausitz) Isn’t Just Another Sleepy Backwater

Weißwasser in Upper Lusatia (Oberlausitz) probably isn’t what you would expect of a tourist town, but that doesn’t mean that you need to pass it up automatically. This town, with two water towers on its coat of arms, has a lot to offer as far as natural beauty and attractions goes.

One garden that you might want to take a look at is the Rhododendron Park. Of course, the best time to come is when the flowers are in bloom, but any time of the year will give you a relaxing afternoon.

On one of those rainy afternoons, check out the Glass Museum. At this house, you can see how glass is worked and transformed from something ordinary to an extraordinary piece of work. Glass working has been going on here since 1877, and you can see some of this old work on display.

A trip to Weißwasser means that you aren’t far from Muskauer Heide. This park is a UNESCO world heritage site and really shouldn’t be missed.

If you are up to it, you can explore this huge area by bike, seeing the new castle and sitting in a cafe. Bicycle paths criss-cross this entire area. There are plenty of opportunities to rent a bicycle for a day or a week at tourist offices and guest houses.

If you think that this German town sounds a bit sleepy, think again. During the hockey season, check out the title winning Foxes as they battle other teams from across the country. The Foxes are pretty good, often winning the title in their league. The arena that they play in has room for over 3,000 fans.

Finally, don’t forget about a trip to the zoo. If you are traveling with kids, this is a great place to let them unwind a bit. It’s not the biggest zoo in Germany, but its still a pretty nice place.
