Alzey-Worms District — On The Rhine Sits This Extensive Vineyard

On the eastern edge of Rhineland-Palatinate and just north of one of Germany’s oldest cities of Worms is the Alzey-Worms District. Starting on the western bank of the Rhine opposite Hesse, this region rises up to the Alzey Uplands at the edge of the Palatinate Forest to the south-west in an area known as the Rheinhessische Schweiz — their little Switzerland.

The capital town of Alzey is the fourth largest town in the wine growing region known as Rheinhessen a.k.a. Rhenish Hesse, and has one of the largest areas of vineyards.

The region has been settled since the Stone Age, and its rich history can be discovered in its villages and many museums. Many locations are medieval in appearance and have narrow, cobbled streets and half-timbered houses for you to peruse in-between cafes and shopping.

Culturally, the Alzey-Worms District is famous for its “Songs of Nibelungs,” a German epic poem about a local dragon-still found on their coat-of-arms. More modern additions though include the Wartberg Observation Tower, from where you can see as far as the Taunus mountains, and several areas of wind farms in the more remote locations.
