Heidekreis — Playland Of The Lüneburg Heath

January 17th, 2012

The Heidekreis is located in the center of the triangle formed by Hanover, Bremen and Hamburg. Most of its land mass is given over to the Lüneburg Heath, an expanse of moor-like plains covered with heather and juniper, marshes and small woodlands.

The district has transformed what was once barren wasteland into a playground for residents from the surrounding urban areas. Walking and cycling in the heath is a popular pastime, with well marked routes taking you through the moors to the rivers and floodplains of the south.

The district seat is Bad Fallingbostel, where natural spring waters bubble up to fill outdoor and indoor spas. Stay here for your health, to take the cure, or simply to relax near the heath’s vast fields and meadows.

Neighboring the capital is Walsrode with its popular Vogelpark (Bird Park), home to more than 5,000 feathered species from around the world, including golden eagles, penguins and ostriches, to name just a few. Activities for visitors range from hiking and biking on more than 700 trails to canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, golf and wagon rides. Frequent festivals and farmers markets are held here, too.

Then, in the town of Soltau, you may be surprised to discover North Germany‘s largest theme park. The Heide-Park Soltau has 50+ attractions and shows, including more than 40 amusement rides, such as Swiss bobsleds, raging river rafting and Colossos, the world’s biggest wooden rollercoaster.
