The town of Westoverledingen has several interesting attractions. Along with the beautiful landscape and scenery that is offered by almost any town in Germany, Westoverledingen offers several museums and other culture and country adventures.

One museum that you may find particularly interesting is the “From Grain To Bread” museum. This museum is the remains of an old bakery where you can see a reconstructed steam oven, several grain mills, and an original bread wagon.

Another farm-related museum that is a popular amongst tourists is the historic “Neemann” farmhouse. You’ll see a huge collection of old farming tools and crafts. You’ll also get a glimpse of every day life by strolling through the living areas of the farmhouse, including the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and more.

If you would rather spend your time in the present, you can visit the four-star nature park and campgrounds, Freizeitpark. The whole family will feel comfortable exploring the natural North German countryside at this park overlooking a natural lake, where you can enjoy fishing, boating, or just relaxing along the coast. Be sure to visit a local visitors bureau to find out about the different rules and regulations for fishing the waters.

Along with the park, there are some nice cycling routes near this cozy little German town. The most well-known bike trail is located near the Dutch border, between Leer and Papenburg. You’ll get a close look at the windmills, dikes, and small woodland areas.

You don’t have to worry about trying to find good food when you travel through Westoverledingen. Good food and beer are easy to find here, and if you are like me, nothing beats good authentic German food and tasty beer from local microbreweries.

There are many German restaurants dotting the landscape, but there are also places you can go for an out of town taste. For good Greek cuisine, check out Syrtaki in the nearby town of Leer. It’s located just around the corner from the railway station. ;-)

One of my favorite things to do in Oberkirch is to take the 7 km culinary wine walk. The tour takes you past beautiful vineyards and to the ruins of castle Schauenburg. While taking the walk, you’ll get to enjoy a delicious 4-course meal with perfect matching wines.

If you’d rather relax in town, you are sure to enjoy the atmosphere of Old Town. Take snapshots of its historic half-timbered houses, remains of old fortifications and city walls, fountains, monuments, and many more symbols of bygone days.

Old Town is a popular meeting place for families and friends to get together and enjoy food and drink against a picture perfect backdrop of churchyards and gardens.

There are many outdoor activities you can take part in while you are staying in Oberkirch. You can do everything from swimming or basking along the side of a pool in the local water park, to hiking one of the many orchard trails or wine walks, to cycling along mountain trails, and much more. You’ll never get bored with the wide variety of outdoor activities available (although you might get fatigued!).

One of the other interesting things about Oberkirch is the local farmers markets. It is a great feeling to meet the local merchants and farmers and get a feel for the small-town lifestyle. You won’t be disappointed by the taste of the delicious fresh produce you’ll find while browsing the market. Be sure to bring your appetite with you wherever you go!

Oberkirch is located in the Ortenau region (which I really love), and also very close to the mystic Black Forest. If you are looking for an authentic Black Forest cuckoo clock, you’ll be able to find plenty to choose from at any of the local shops.

There are also museums and historical sites with interesting things to see and information to learn about the Schwarzwald and its surrounding areas.
