In Eschwege, Celebrate The Johannisfest Like The Locals Do

June 29th, 2009

Eschwege is more than 1000 years old and more than 1000 historical buildings bear witness of its rich history — what an equation!

The best thing you can do in Eschwege is to take a leisurely stroll through its historical center. Have a look at the 13th-century Gothic Neustädter Church St. Katherina, the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House) from 1578, the Nikolai tower from 1455, and the former synagogue.

There are more than 1000 typical timber framed houses. If you want to be absolutely sure that you won’t miss out on anything it’s a good idea to take a guided tour.

Dietemann is the symbol of the city and a pretty elusive personage. He only shows himself once every hour. Dietemann seems to reside at the castle tower, at least, that’s the only place where he is spotted.

The castle, once the residence of the count that ruled the town and its environments, is now used by districts administration. It’s well worth a visit if only to see and hear the Dietemann appear on one of its towers.

A good place to learn more about the town is the municipal museum which gives you an overview of the city’s history and culture.

Remember how much fun it was to play with tin soldiers when you were young? If the answer is yes you will certainly enjoy the Tin Figurines Museum (Zinnfigurenmuseum). This part of Germany has been the center of the tin figurines industry for a long time.

If you happen to visit Eschwege in summer try to plan your visit around the traditional Johannisfest. For five days the city is turned in one big carnivalesque party. A local joke illustrates the importance of the Johannisfest: When asked how many seasons there are a citizen of Eschwege doesn’t have to think long: “Two: before and after the Johannisfest!”

Friesoythe — A 300 Year Old Ham, Iron Welding, And Tigers!

June 28th, 2009

Friesoythe, a small town in Lower Saxony situated in the recreation area Thülsfelder Talsperre, is a good place to use a base to explore the area. If you love walking, bicycling or fishing the forests, meadows, lakes and brooks give plenty of opportunities to enjoy a blessing time.

Friesoythe itself offers some quirky sights. How about a 300 year old ham that is supposed to defend the town against the pest?

The story goes that the ham in some miraculous way absorbed the pest that scourged the area. The pest, which took the form of a blue cloud, was locked in the ham and the people stopped dying. As a result of that the pest ham became imperishable and is still on display for the interested visitor — in the Maria School.

For something more mundane head to the Post Museum where you will learn everything you always wanted to know (and never dared to ask…) — about the history of the postal service in this region from 1750 until the present.

Visitors with an interest in “green” energy should go to the Information Center of Renewable Energy. This info center is build around an old water mill and shows how water can be used as a source of energy. Even if you’re less eco-minded it is fun to see the old water wheels in full swing.

If you visit Friesoythe with your family the obvious place to go to is the zoo and theme park Thüle. There are more than 120 different kinds of animals, among them a couple of imposing tigers. The ape enclosure is one of the highlights of the zoo; taking the walkway straight through the enclosure gets you up-close to the monkeys.

The petting zoo is also great fun for the kiddies.
