Versmold — The Town Of The Sausage Maker

June 21st, 2009

Located in the Gütersloh District of the North Rhine-Westphalia state, Versmold is historically an important city for food production, especially sausage making — yet another of the many towns which seem to boast this as their claim to fame.

The sausages made here are, however, truly scrumptious and once you taste them it is easy to see why locals are so proud of them, and proud they are. You can even see a lasting memorial to this rural art, by paying a visit to the sausage makers’ fountain on Marktplatz in the town center.

The town remains the modern-day home of several major meat processing plants, so you should make every effort to sample some of the local delicacies when visiting. Some local produce can be tasted at the Versmold market, which is held through the summer every year.

The town plays host to a number of festivals and celebrations throughout the year, so if possible, visit during one of these periods.

Around town there are a number of sights you should consider visiting; including the Town Hall, which hosts regular exhibitions such as a photo exhibition; the theater, which produces first-class performances; and the bookstore, which has regular readings from local authors such as Hans Ulrich Treichel, who grew up in Versmold.

Versmold is split into six districts, each with their own educational and recreational facilities. The tip is simply to get out there and explore, with the mountain countryside of the Teutoburg Forest and the parklands of the Münsterland area just waiting for your visit, either on foot or by bicycle.

South of the city is the Versmolder Bruch bird sanctuary, where you can not only see a wide variety of rare birds, but also read and learn about how the sanctuary gives them chance to regenerate, bringing them back from the brink of extinction.

Traunreut — Industrial City Close To The German Alps

June 21st, 2009

The industrial city of Traunreut is well located, 25km north of the German Alps, in the Chiemgau region between Munich and Salzburg. It is home to a number of big companies such as Bosch, Siemens and BSH among others.

Despite the main, industrial nature of the city, you can still enjoy a great holiday here. Perfectly positioned for trips to the surrounding lakes and mountains, you can even reach the Austrian border in less than an hour’s drive.

One of the main draws of this attractive city is the nature aspect. The best way to explore the area is by hiring a bicycle and covering as much of the 100km of cycling and hiking paths as you possibly can. It may prove hard work, but will be worth it as you take in the stunning scenery as you go, picking up some health benefits at the same time.

The views available in the area are simply unrivaled by most of Germany’s other industrial hubs, and somehow seem just that little bit more spectacular when you have had to break into a sweat to see them!

A great place to head is the stone cave roost in the Chiemgau region, where you can enjoy a guided tour through a unique cave castle and its Castle Brewery Stone, known as the Heinz vom Stein Experience – you even get a free Steiner Glass at the end of it all!

With the center of the town there is also much to see and do. Enjoy the pleasing architecture of the Town Square and City Hall, the Parish Church of St. George and the Pfarrkirche Traunviertel Walchen (Parish Church).

After a busy day of sightseeing you will probably feel like relaxing, and there are a number of restaurants and bars to choose from within the city.
