Bleckede — Castles, Churches, And A Chimney Atop A Bakery

Bleckede’s attractions include the usual with the idiosyncratic. Where else would you find a town obsessed with a Stork family and their domestic affairs?

Apparently this obsessive interest in the stork family has been going on for about fourteen years to the extent that they have a camera up there giving a live telecast of all proceedings from incubation to hatching to padding and beyond. So if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, I suppose the chimney atop the bakery would have to be right at the top of your list of things to do. ;-)

Bleckede has many architectural gems you might want to check out. Take the half-timbered homes that line up against the old streets. No matter how many you’ve seen, there’s always a wow left in you for the next one.

For an encore get yourself atop the Castle Tower observation deck for an awe-inspiring view of the Elbe valley.

The St. Jacobi Church sporting baroque style architecture is another must-see.

Bleckede’s Elbschloss is another tryst with nature for the entire family. They even have bird calls on piano. Take a well deserved break at the café when you feel like you can’t walk another step.

Speaking of walking, well, if you don’t mind the exercise you really could consider embarking on a guided walking tour of this beautiful city that covers all the historic spots without fail. If not get on one of the cycling routes that crisscross the lovely landscape.

In Bleckede you will come across this group of boulders which look like some giant’s pebble collection. Well, they are actually remnants of the Ice Age when the whole place was probably one big glacier. Fancy that! Now they’ve made a fancy garden out of it. So if you want to check this out you need to visit the Findlingsgarten Breetz.

For some more ancient history, consider visiting the Schiering forest of dolmens in Barskamp where they have preserved remains of settlements from the Neolithic age.

Now if what you’d prefer is to let someone else do the driving, Bleckede has provisions for that as well. Take a cruise on the Elbe that lets you also take in some of the most beautiful scenery you may have ever seen.

A horse drawn carriage is another great idea for a romantic trip. Maybe a trolley ride on an old railway line is more up your alley? Or then again, a motorized raft is what does it for you. There’s also the Bleckede light railway which really gives you a fairy tale ride you won’t forget in a long time to come.
