In the town of Osterhofen, you must see the masterful Asam Basilica, with its impressive high altar and wonderful frescoes. Then travel to the district’s capital and largest town, Deggendorf, to experience the gateway to Bohemia: river cruises, forest walks, exceptional shopping, delicious food, and a car-free medieval town square.

In Metten, you will want to take time for reflection in the exquisite gardens of the local Benedictine Abbey. For comparison, move along to Lalling and experience “harmony with nature” at the Zen Garden of the town’s Feng Shui Park. Or if you prefer a higher degree of activity, go to Niederalteich, the starting point for a 55-kilometer bike path along the Danube known as the Donau-Ilz Cycle Way.

In July, the town of Plattling turns the gardens and halls of its Civic Hospital into a haven for artists. You will hear concerts ranging from blues to classical music, and perhaps see a feather-clad stage performer entertaining with a Brazilian dance. Admission is always free.
