Erlangen grows on you and soon you’ll feel like a local. It has plenty of beauteous landmarks that tell tales from history to keep you captivated.
Explore the Old Town with its three famous churches vying with each other in architectural splendour. The Hugenottenkirche, the Neustädterkirche, and the Dreifaltigkeitskirche have enough between them to keep you happily engrossed for the better part of a day. Right next door is the Muncipal Museum which is where you can learn all about the history of Erlangen.
More history awaits you at the Erlanger Schloss or what is known as the Frederick Alexander University. In the grounds you can explore a Botanic Garden. Check out the Margravial Theatre and the University Library that houses rare manuscripts and works of art.
You’ll love the garden that echoes both English and French influences and is maintained meticulously with not a leaf out of place. The Huguenot Fountain and an Orangery that go way back to the 18th century are of prime attraction here.
The Erlangen Market Place has plenty for you to explore with the stately Stutternheim Palace that houses the Municipal Museum and Art Gallery, and the Margravial Palace. Walk along the fabulous pedestrian zone to get your fill of this beautiful city.
When you need a break, stroll into one of the little coffee shops or get yourself to a lovely city park to let nature relax you. Listen to the sonorous church bell in the vicinity as you watch the student population go about their businesses.
Erlangen now boasts of a brand new mall with food courts and boutique shops in its city center for all your shopping needs. If you prefer to browse the quaint souvenir shops selling local goods, there’s plenty of that as well. The wayside restaurants will have you come back for more of that lovely local cuisine and beer.
Oktoberfest is when the city erupts into a burst of energy and comes truly alive. The Beer Fest in May/June held in the woods with lots of singing and dancing is a great occasion to visit Erlangen. :-)
Another season for celebration is in December with the fabulous Christmas market and decorations throughout the city.
