The northern half of the district lies within the Thuringian Forest, and added to this, you will find the extensive Hassberge Nature Park running along its entire southern border. As a result, densely forested areas cover most of the region, and this attractive hilly countryside can be found in all directions.
These miles of delightful scenery are dotted with small villages and winding waterways. The capital town of Hildburghausen itself sits across the busy Werra river and its pretty harborside houses and shops lead into the heart of the shopping center, where boutiques and street-side cafes await you.
The Hildburghausen District also has a religious history. The Holy Roman Empire’s bishopric of Würzburg’s pointed sign appears on the regions coat of arms. The whole area is also filled with ducal palaces and stately gardens.
