The seat of the district is Karlstadt, where the Town History Museum treats you to displays of its 800-year history. Swimming, fishing, hiking castle ruins, boating and cycling are just a few of the activities you can enjoy here along the banks of the river.
If you happen to visit Gemünden am Main in summer, be sure to catch the annual Homeland Festival. It is noted for portrayals of local customs and culture, beer tents, games, rides and fireworks near the impressive ruins of Scherenburg castle.
At the historic town of Lohr am Main, numerous museums, three nature parks and a quaint market attract a steady flow of holidaymakers. It is said that the castle here inspired a famous Brothers Grimm fairy tale – Snow White.
Picturesque Marktheidenfeld, also on the Main, offers you its beautiful St. Lawrence Church and stately Old Main Bridge. Then stop by neighboring Rothenfels to see its 12th-century castle atop red sandstone cliffs.
Should you tire of castles, woods and water, go to Arnstein. A former wine-producing estate here has been converted into the Erlasse Solar Park, the largest solar power station of its kind in the world.
