Stretched across central Saxony — bordering Thuringia in the north and the Czech Republic in the south — is the Mittelsachsen District. From the low plains between Leipzig and Dresden it rises to great heights in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) which holds its snow through the winter.

Freiberg is the capital of the region and has a delightful medieval part of town which has heritage protection. It also has one of the oldest mining universities in the country, linked with the historic industry for the neighboring mountains.
The Mittelsachsen District also contains many religious buildings including the basilica in Wechselburg with a huge and unusual carved roof screen and an active Benedictine Priory.
Oederan has an extensive Miniature Town that all the family will love — which has a tiny church complete with with its own organ!
There is even a town in this district called Frankenstein, for all you horror film buffs! ;-)
