Neu-Anspach is a revelation. As soon as you hit the town you’ll probably be directed to its famous landmark — the Hessenpark or the Open-air Museum of the State of Hesse. Truly speaking, if there’s nothing else to see here you still won’t regret this visit for this is the mother of all museums!
Okay, this is what it is. It is a replica of an original medieval village complete with fully furnished half-timbered buildings, church with steeple, quaint village homes with sheepfolds, a historic restaurant, well, you get the picture.
Normal daily life is enacted by performers who are in fact living a medieval life as a day job. Come to think of it, wonder if they have vacancies to fill…
This incredible museum in Neu-Anspach is not done with you yet. They have exciting events as part of the exhibits and this includes Fairy Tale Day, Harvest Festival, Arts and Entertainment Events, and Photography Exhibits. You can take part in Costume Dramas and carry on as if you were actually a medieval cowherd or milkmaid.
Guided tours are available if you don’t want to get your hands dirty.
Neu-Anspach has more attractions if you can get over the open-air museum. There’s the Lochmühle Leisure Park and the nearby Saalburg Roman Fort.
