There are well preserved castles, such as the Grünau and Neuberg. You will also find magnificent hunting lodges, hiking and cycling trails that wind through river valleys, and local foods worth writing home about.

The district seat is Neuburg an der Donau, situated on the lovely Danube River. Inside the town’s medieval walls you can find modern theaters, jazz clubs, billiards halls, galleries and sports venues. Be sure not to miss “Museum Mile” on Lenbach Road, with its European asparagus museum, the renovated Zeiselmair House, and an art museum dedicated to portraiture.

To the south, central Schrobenhausen is surrounded by a dense circle of trees. This is your destination for the annual Asparagus Market, where you will sample ham, potatoes, and delicious asparagus dishes, along with matching wines.

In Bergheim an der Donau you can visit the 18th-century Church of St. Mauritius, built upon a site used for religious purposes since 1182.

And in tiny Königsmoos, you can hire local guides to show you the hidden sights of the Bavaria’s natural core, including a labyrinth made of vegetation and the unique moss houses of the Danube and Paar rivers.
