Neuwied District — On The Banks Of The Rhine

On the border of North Rhine-Westphalia in the north of the Rhineland-Palatinate state is the forested Neuwied District. High in the Westerwald mountains and often shrouded in mist, this region is close to Koblenz and Bonn on the banks of the Rhine.

Linz is a tourist hot-spot here, with its brightly painted half-timbered houses lining the tiny streets, and the capital of Neuwied on the Rhine itself also has some great architecture — including the largest Roman “castra” excavation in the world.

More modern buildings in the Neuwied District include Freiligrathus: the extravagant Baroque palace on the Rhine promenade — best viewed from on the water. However, while traveling down the river, there is much more on offer with fantastic castles perched on hilltops and pretty waterfront properties and restaurants to peruse. It’s difficult to know which way to look!

To the very north there is the great Siebengebirge mountain range with the famous Drachensfels, from where you can see the whole of this beautiful district spread out before you to the south.
