Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis — A Stunningly Beautiful Stretch

Covering a large area of the Hunsrück Mountains in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis is more famous for its small Rhine riverside — including the famous Loreley Rocks where the channel is at its thinnest and most dangerous for large ships.

Carving steep sides through the slate mountains, the river wends its way through the most beautiful gorges. Steep vineyards and hill-top castles line your journey as you cruise downstream. However, hopping onland also offers some unforgettable walks and near vertical ascents!

Starting at Boppard, is the Klettersteig cliffside hike, or for the less energetic — the cliffside Hunsrückbahn. It crosses two viaducts and enters five tunnels with some absolutely amazing scenes of the river below. Avoid if you have vertigo!

The slender town of St Goar upstream is just as scenic and well worth a long visit. It has the huge Burg Rheinfels (ruin) balanced above it, with labyrinthine rooms and underground trails. Its not an easy walk up the slope (and there are trains available in many places) but high on the gorge sides of the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis you will find some of the most breath-taking sites.
