The famous wine-producing Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in southern Hesse sits on the northern bank of the Rhine. Spreading from the fertile floodplains, it climbs slowly up the slopes of the Taunus mountains and into the great forests of the nature park Rhein-Taunus.

The amazingly beautiful Rheingauer Riesling Wine Route winds its way through the district, visiting great vineyards and tiny villages and towns, such as the infamous Rüdesheim am Rhein, to sample the regions wines through the summer. The great research center in Geisenheim focuses entirely on viticulture and oenology to make sure the crops are the best they can be. In fact, it has some of the best vineyards!
And after making sure the wine is good, treat yourself to a relaxing spa! Bad Schwalbach, the capital of the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the mountains, has some great mineral spas, but head to Schlangenbad for more choices. With its eight thermal springs it is perfect to calm the nerves before heading off to one of the great summer music festivals — or maybe the impressive Rhine in Flames.
Certain areas are also famous for their roses, and there is a popular annual show held around the town of Eltville which sits on the Rhine.
