Saale-Holzland-Kreis — Peaceful Valley, Rich In History

Towards the east of the state of Thuringia is the Saale-Holzland-Kreis. Bordering on Saxony-Anhalt, this district surrounds the university city of Jena and touches on Gera to the west. This is a very low state in the valley of the river Saale and is filled with farmland and open plains.

Many of the towns and villages in this area are steeped in history and legend, and many of their coat of arms feature green dragons being slayed!

The town of Eisenberg has cobbled streets and painted houses — so typical of this region — and the period of great knights also feature with links to these locations.

Stadtroda on the river Roda is the best example of a medieval location in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis. It has many features of the middle ages including half-timbered houses and tiny, winding roads. It also has numerous merchants houses wedged together and plentiful restaurants and cafes spilling onto the streets.

This town was also believed to the be the birthplace of Faust — the man who made a pact with the devil! ;-)
