Saale-Orla-Kreis — Rugged Highland Region Divided By Great Rivers

Found on the south-eastern edge of Thuringia and bordering on both Bavaria and Saxony sits the mountainous Saale-Orla-Kreis. With the two main rivers which give the district its name, carving great valleys and sweeping through open floodplains it offers much hiking and outdoor delights.

The idyllic Vogtland — part of a great region of wooded vales and mountains spreading through to the Czech Republic — covers a great part of the district and is filled with distinct towns and villages.

A visit to the spa town of Bad Lobenstein is a must — it is built around a rocky outcrop on which a great castle stands. And nearby Pößneck has many great Gothic buildings and sloping, cobbled streets to keep your camera busy!

The Saale-Orla-Kreis also has the biggest system of artificial lakes in the country offering a whole host of water sports and hiking trails. The dams of the Saale have created a haven for wildlife too. Cultural tourism is also an important part of the region — and there are no end of local museums and theaters to visit. :-)
