The Straubing-Bogen District extends from the lowlands of the Danube River to the wooded mountains of the Bavarian Forest. As you might imagine, winter sports are huge here, including skiing, skating, tobogganing, and Nordic cruising.

If you prefer summer outdoor activities, there are even more to choose from. You can have your choice of fun on land (golf, tennis, and cycling), water (swimming, wind surfing and boating) and air (hot air ballooning, hang gliding, and parasailing). :-)
You will soon notice that castles abound in this region. You can find one in Falkenfels that features a restaurant. There are others in Mitterfels and Wiesenfelden that house museums. And if you fancy an overnight stay, go to Neukirchen, Rattiszel or Schwarzach, each of which have castle guest houses.
Folk festivals are also very popular in this district and they often run from five days to a week or more. The Gäuboden Folk Festival held each August in the district capital lasts eleven days and has become the second largest of its kind in Bavaria.
Otherwise, see if you can arrange your visit to take advantage of the Stöttner private brewery festival in the market town of Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg in August. Or make a point of attending the town festival in Schwarzach in May. Period costumes, free concerts, and lots of food and drink will make your stay enjoyable.
