Found to the east of Mittelhessen, Vogelsbergkreis is a sparsely populated region in the low sweeping central valleys of this state. Famed for its volcanic Vogelsberg Mountains (Nature Park included), pretty medieval villages, hill-top castles and also several health spas — this region is very popular with all who visit.
Towns & Villages in the Vogelsbergkreis
The town of Kirtorf is named as one of the starting points for the well-trodden Fairy Tale Route, taking visitors northwards on the trail of childhood bed-time stories. Many villages and castles around here have a history.
The sleepy town of Alsfeld could well take you back to those stories with its half-timbered houses crammed into tiny streets. One look at the Altes Rathaus (the Old Town Hall) with its top heavy design, white washed front and curved towers in the roof is enough to get your imagination going!
The capital of the Vogelsbergkreis, Lauterbach, is a huge cultural draw. Festivals, concerts and theater throughout the year both indoor and open air should draw you in. But if you fancy fresh air, why not head up the Schlotten and try out some hiking or skiing (depending on the season)!
