Wiefelstede Has History, Santas, And Very Good Ice Cream

Wiefelstede is a tasty part of the Ammerland region. It’s a delicious stop on a number of levels, offering a little something for the body, the mind, and the spirit. It’s mainly a matter of determining which part of yourself you want to satisfy first.

For the spirit, you can take in the St. Johannes Evangelical Lutheran Church. As the oldest stone building in the region, it dates back to 1057 AD and is still in use. Bokel Castle is another ancient treasure, with double circular walls testifying to the ingenuity of early builders.

For your mind, you can contemplate the engineering feats of our ancestors, and marvel at some modern engineering wonders, too. The Brotie Automation GmbH does automated aircraft assembly in the area. Taking a tour will really make you appreciate the power of German technology.

For your body, you can have both athletic and culinary delights. Wiefelstede is known for its self-guided bike tours, and the Bockhorner marsh is also good for walking. The 3-Rivers Ride features the Jümme river, and hikers and riders both usually sneak in a few pictures.

The other bodily treat is the Wiefelstede cheese… and ice cream! The Wiefelstede Dairy is open to the public, and they make all of their milks, cheeses, and ice creams fresh on site. Their attached malt shop is the perfect reward for taking on any of the outdoor trails, or really, the excellent reward for just existing ;-)

If you come during the holiday season, your mind, body, and spirit get a bonus retreat in the form of the local Santa, who camps out in the Weihnachtsmarkt vorm Rathaus Christmas market, right in front of the City Hall. You can get a picture for the kids or for a laugh for yourself.

Follow it off with sausages, mulled wine, and waffles, and of course… more ice cream! ;-)
