Wittenberg District — County Of Reformation

The history of the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt was strongly influenced by Luther, Melanchthon, and Cranach, which attracts people from all over the world.

I think it’s the cultural variety that impresses visitors the most when they decide to take their vacation in the Wittenberg district.

What you are going to find here are things like the historical Lutherstadt Wittenberg with its Schlosskirche which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

But here are also natural spots such as the wine hills in the region around Jessen as well as the Naturpark Dübener Heide, a nature reserve located between the towns of Düben, Gräfenhainichen, Kemberg, Pretzsch, and Tornau.

Saarpfalz District Is Where The Nature Shines

The Saarpfalz district in the state of Saarland is ideal for bike and walking tours (including Nordic Walking) and to discover some of the historical and well maintained sights in and outside of its towns and villages.

Visit the Schlosskirche in Blieskastel, a century-old Castle Church with an impressive architecture and interior. The historical Old Town of this town is also well worth a visit.

Then there is the Engelbertkirche in Sankt Ingbert, a baroque building from the 17th century which has also an impressive interior.

And of course when you are in Homburg step up to visit the ruins of the Schloss Karlsberg, which was a castle in the 18th century and destroyed by French troops later.

Stendal District Is Made For Nature Lovers

Sankt Wendel District — Nature, Sport, History

The Sankt Wendel district in the state of Saarland is a nice spot for relaxation, skating, water sport, and for biking tours.

Cities, Towns & Villages in the Sankt Wendel District

For example, take a tour through the Keltischer Ringwall in Nonnweiler. These are celtic stone walls with a thickness of 4m/13ft and are considered the largest fortification of the Celts in Europe. They offer sightseeing tours.

Another sweet spot is Tholey and its Hofgut Imsbach as well as the Johann-Adams-Mühle. The former was a fortress in the Third Reich, the latter is a historical mill which was nicely restored and still has a 200 years old oven plus a picturesque restaurant.

Then there is Sankt Wendel, a 1,500+ year old town with historical buildings, invitations to events and celebrations, and a couple museums and gardens.

Last but not least, you should go visit the Bostalsee (southwest of Nohfelden), a popular lake which is the largest in the Sankt Wendel district, providing you with lots of opportunities for water sports and camping.

Anhalt-Bitterfeld District — County Of Coal Mining

The Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt went under substantial changes in that most of the small villages had been incorporated into bigger ones.

“So, what am I going to find in this district with all those small villages?” I’m glad you asked… ;-)

Köthen (Anhalt) is one of those towns you don’t wanna miss as it has a historical residence castle, a couple interesting churches, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s best works.

Bitterfeld-Wolfen will impress you for how it changed from an industrial, brown to a fresh, green city. Influenced by its coal mining history, it did now make a change in that it created more green areas.

Then there is the residence town of Zerbst in the nothern part of the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district with lots of historical buildings, museums, as well as a castle. Stroll through the town center and you’ll know what I mean.

Merzig-Wadern District Is Made For Green, Refreshing Tours

As they call it lovely the “Green District,” the Merzig-Wadern district borders to France and Luxembourg, providing plenty of opportunities for taking “green tours.”

The Celts and the Romans appreciated the pleasant climate here. Today the “Green District” presents itself as true walking and cycling paradise.

Particularly the former Treidelpfade at the Moselle and the Saar River invite to bike tours. While that you will discover interesting places of interest which ensure exciting trips.

Saarbrücken District — 1,000+ Years Of History

Yes, Saarbrücken is not only a city, it’s a district at the same time, too.

Here, you’re going to find, of course, the capital of Saarland, Saarbrücken. You’re further going to find the city Völklingen with its UNESCO World Heritage site Völklinger Höfe, as well as the smaller towns listed in the table above.

Saarbrücken has a touch of Hollywood thanks to the Max Ophüls Prize. Every year in January, it hosts a film festival for up-and-coming German film directors and actors.

Saarlouis District — Great For Biking And Horse Riding

The Saarlouis district in the state of Saarland is a great destination for taking walking, hiking, riding and biking tours.

Take a tour through Ensdorf for some hiking fun. In case you like skating, then visit Saarlouis, the district’s capital. And the town of Bous awaits you with the opportunity to feel like Michael Schumacher as they offer a cart course.

Not to forget the countless bike courses throughout the district. Rent a bike and have some fun, enjoying picknicks along the way.

Neunkirchen District — Romantic And Modern

As they call it lovely the Rosenkreis (Rose District), the Neunkirchen district can be seen as an idyllic spot in the state of Saarland, preserving many of its historical buildings.

Visit Illingen and its historical castle ruin. Or take a minute and walk through the Elektronik Museum, which shows ovens and automobiles from the year 1903.

Or what about the town of Ottweiler, giving you with its romantic town center of the middle ages plenty of opportunities for taking timeless photos.

Then, of course, there is the town of Neunkirchen, the district’s capital, with its zoo park as well as the Hütte, a 150-year old iron factory.
